New York CNN —Smoky, hazy gambling floors have long been part of the Atlantic City casino experience for some people. Phil Murphy and the state’s health commissioner claiming that a loophole in state law exposes casino workers to health problems from secondhand smoke. Casino workers have long been advocating for protections under the 2006 smoke-free law, but progress has been snagged for years in the New Jersey legislature. But somehow, our casino workers have been asked to roll the dice,” UAW President Shawn Fain said at a press conference Friday. The casino workers have faced “death, severe physical illness, severe mental, physical and emotional distress, pain and suffering, anxiety, and stress,” the lawsuit said.

A decision by such voters that they cannot morally support Biden over this single issue could have a significant impact. “We should … not forget how President Biden beat Trump in 2020. Accepting what liberals see as draconian Trump-style restrictions on asylum would be viewed as a betrayal by many in Biden’s coalition. A CNN survey in November, for example, showed Biden led Trump among Black voters 73% to 23%. Latino voters favored Biden over Trump by only four points in the poll compared to 33 points in the 2020 election.

New York CNN —The longest US auto strike this century is over after a pretty clear win for the United Auto Workers union at all three unionized automakers. “I don’t like what I’ve seen in my work career with the UAW leadership, where they were too damn close to the companies,” UAW President Shawn Fain told CNN earlier this month. So I like to let the body of work speak for itself.”The success of those contracts is the reason that Shawn Fain is CNN Business’ labor leader of the year. All told nearly 800,000 union members got raises of 10% or more during 2023. The plant will be be reopened under the agreement reached between Stellantis and the UAW to end the union's strike at the company.

But the UAW’s ambitious plans to organize Tesla and other non-union automakers face steep odds. To grow, the UAW will need to gain a foothold at non-union automakers, which produce more than half of the cars assembled in the United States. Historically, UAW talks with the Detroit automakers have been closely watched by non-union automakers and suppliers. Anti-union companiesThe UAW will have to overcome weak protections for labor organizing in the United States and automakers’ aggressive tactics to defeat unions. It may be easier for UAW to organize Volkswagen and other European automakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz than automakers from Asia, experts say.

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union sent 6,800 Stellantis employees to the picket line Monday morning in a surprise, targeted strike at the company’s Ram truck facility. The Sterling Heights Assembly Plant is Stellantis’ “largest plant and biggest moneymaker,” UAW said in a statement Monday. The first was at Ford on October 11, when the UAW went on strike at that automaker’s largest plant, the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville. Expanding strikeThere are now more than 40,000 UAW members on strike as it enters its sixth week, with 14,600 on now on strike at Stellantis, joining the 16,600 on strike at Ford and 9,200 on strike at GM. But the union has stopped short of having all 145,000 members at the three companies all be on strike.

CNN —Ford is laying off about 700 workers who build the F-150 Lightning, the electric version of its best-selling pickup truck, and unlike other recent layoffs this one has nothing to do with the ongoing strike by the United Auto Workers union. The company said overall demand for its electric vehicle lineup remains strong with a 65% increase in the third quarter. It has laid off nearly 2,500 workers so far, not counting those who had been building the Lightning. Workers laid off due to the strike are ineligible for unemployment benefits in most states. But the F-150 Lightning workers who are laid off will be eligible for both unemployment and sub pay, according to Ford spokesperson Jessica Enoch.

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers (UAW) says its members have voted to reject a tentative agreement with Mack Trucks and will go on strike Monday. Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks, was quoted by Reuters as saying he was “surprised and disappointed” that the union had chosen to strike. CNN has reached out to Mack Trucks for comment. Mack Trucks is one of the major US makers of heavy duty and medium duty trucks, with deliveries of 27,000 in 2022 and 16,000 for the first half of 2023. New York CNN —An 11th-hour tentative contract agreement reached between Mack Trucks and the United Auto Workers union late Sunday narrowly averted a strike by 3,900 employees at the company. There are other UAW members on strike elsewhere also receiving the same strike benefit, including more than 1,000 members on strike at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. It last struck Mack Trucks in October of 2019, just after a six-week strike at GM. The walkouts began on September 15 and have since expanded to include more than 25,000 union members across the three companies. Mack Trucks is one of the major US makers of heavy duty and medium duty trucks, with deliveries of 27,000 in 2022, and 16,000 in for the first half of 2023.

CNN —Members of Canada’s autoworkers union, Unifor, began voting Saturday on a tentative three-year agreement the union announced it reached with Ford Motor Co. last week. Ford has said it will not comment on the terms of the tentative agreement while Unifor conducts its ratification vote. The provisional agreement comes as Ford is making headway in its negotiations with the United Auto Workers, the union representing American workers. “We do want to recognize that Ford is serious about reaching a deal,” UAW President Shawn Fain said Friday. The UAW said it did not have a comment on the terms of the Unifor deal with Ford.

New York CNN —Looming over the United Auto Workers strike: Automakers’ continued migration to the anti-union South. Jobs at nonunion EV battery facilities pay less than the roughly $32 an hour that veteran UAW workers make. Since 1990, the South’s share of auto jobs has doubled from around 15% to 30% today, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Mostly nonunion EV jobs and manufacturing investments are surging in Southern states led by Republicans. The South has picked up 66% of planned EV jobs, while projects in Midwestern states such as Michigan, Indiana, Kansas and Ohio have combined for 26% of planned jobs, according to S&P Global.

The White House is confronted by an autoworkers’ strike that Biden himself had predicted two weeks ago wouldn’t happen. White House tries to compartmentalizeAll presidents find themselves weathering tough stretches. Biden’s White House has sought to compartmentalize its response to McCarthy’s impeachment inquiry, walling it off from the ongoing work of the administration. On one side: President Biden, who is focused on delivering for the American people. “Being the son or daughter or granddaughter of a senator, a vice president, a president … everybody thinks it’s a great thing.

NEW YORK (AP) — The United Auto Workers said Saturday it had “reasonably productive conversations” with Ford, as its limited strike against the Big 3 automakers carried into a second day. Stellantis on Saturday also gave details about its most recent offer to the union, which brought its wage proposal roughly in line with its competitors. Now that number is zero, and Stellantis wants to keep playing games.”Nearly 1 in 10 of America’s unionized auto workers went on strike Friday. Automakers have since told some non-striking workers not to report to work, including 600 who were told not to report Friday to a Ford plant. Politicians have been pushing automakers to consider workers who gave up pay and benefits to help their employers during the Great Recession.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The prospect of an auto workers strike could test Joe Biden 's treasured assertion that he's the most pro-union president in U.S. history. Political Cartoons View All 1154 Images“I think the American public as a whole realizes the impact that the American auto workers have on the economy," Killian said. But, unlike with rail and airline workers, the president doesn’t have the authority to order autoworkers to stay on the job. Nowhere will the political fallout of an auto workers strike be felt more than Michigan, which Biden won by nearly 3 percentage points in 2020. And Ray Curry, the former UAW president who was unseated by Fain, had worked with Biden in the past, even attending White House ceremonies.
